TRN verification UAE takes about thirty seconds, and it’s worth doing before you pay a supplier’s invoice with VAT on it: is their Tax Registration Number real?
If it isn’t, you’ve likely paid 5% VAT to someone who wasn’t entitled to charge it — and you can’t reclaim it. The FTA won’t accept an input VAT claim backed by an invalid TRN, and the loss lands on you, not on the supplier who issued the invoice.
This guide covers what a TRN is, how to verify one through the FTA, and what to do when a number doesn’t check out.
What is a TRN in the UAE?
A Tax Registration Number (TRN) is the unique identifier the Federal Tax Authority issues to a business when it registers for VAT in the UAE. It’s the number that ties every taxable transaction back to a registered entity.
A UAE TRN is a 15-digit numeric identifier issued by the FTA.
Practically, the TRN does three things:
- It authorises charging VAT. Only businesses holding a valid TRN may charge VAT on their supplies.
- It enables VAT recovery. Your customers need your TRN on the invoice to reclaim input VAT.
- It identifies you to the FTA. VAT returns, correspondence, and audits all run against it.
VAT-TRN vs. CT-TRN
These get confused often, and the confusion has grown since UAE corporate tax was introduced.
VAT registration and Corporate Tax registration are separate processes with separate obligations, and the FTA issues a separate TRN for each. Your VAT TRN does not double as your Corporate Tax TRN — check which one you’re quoting before putting it on a VAT return, a corporate tax filing, or an invoice.
Who needs a TRN in the UAE?
Registration for VAT falls into two categories:
- Mandatory registration — required once a business’s taxable supplies and imports exceed the mandatory registration threshold of 375,000 AED over the relevant period.
- Voluntary registration — available to businesses whose taxable supplies or expenses exceed the voluntary threshold of 187,500 AED but fall below the mandatory one.
Voluntary registration is worth considering even when you’re not required to register: it lets you recover input VAT on your own purchases, and larger B2B customers often prefer suppliers who can issue proper tax invoices.
TRN Verification UAE: The Step-by-Step Process
TRN verification is free, public, and takes under a minute through the FTA’s official channel. The FTA’s e-services portal (EmaraTax) is updated periodically, so exact screen names may shift slightly — the steps below describe the general process.
- Go to the FTA’s official website at tax.gov.ae. Use the official domain directly rather than a search result — third-party “TRN checker” sites are common and some are not trustworthy.
- Find the TRN verification tool. It’s a public tool and doesn’t require you to log in or hold an account.
- Enter the TRN exactly as it appears on the supplier’s tax invoice, with no spaces or dashes.
- Complete the CAPTCHA and submit.
- Check the result. A valid TRN returns the registered legal name of the business.
- Match the name against the invoice. This is the step most people skip, and it’s the one that matters most — see below.
A valid TRN isn’t enough — match the name
The verification tool tells you whether a TRN exists and who it belongs to. It doesn’t tell you whether the business that sent you the invoice is that business.
A TRN can be real and still be misused — copied from a legitimate company onto someone else’s invoice. So the check isn’t “did the number come back valid,” it’s “does the registered name that came back match the supplier on my invoice.” If the invoice says one company and the FTA returns a different registered name, stop and query it before paying.
Note: minor formatting differences between a trading name and a registered legal name are common and not automatically a red flag.
What to do if a TRN doesn’t verify
TRN verification UAE doesn’t stop at getting a result — knowing what to do next matters just as much. If the number returns invalid, or returns a name that doesn’t match your supplier:
- Don’t pay the VAT portion yet. Once paid against an invalid invoice, recovering it is difficult.
- Go back to the supplier. Genuine causes exist — a typo on the invoice, a recently issued TRN, or a number transposed during data entry.
- Ask for a corrected tax invoice with the correct TRN, rather than accepting a verbal confirmation.
- If it can’t be resolved, treat the invoice as non-compliant. You cannot reclaim input VAT against it, and the FTA’s whistleblower programme, Raqeeb, provides a channel for reporting suspected tax non-compliance.
The cost of getting this wrong is asymmetric. Thirty seconds of checking versus an unrecoverable 5% on every invoice from that supplier.
Where the TRN appears on a tax invoice
A compliant UAE tax invoice must show the supplier’s TRN, and — where the recipient is VAT-registered — the recipient’s TRN as well. TRN verification UAE means checking both numbers, not just one.
A missing TRN is one of the most common reasons a tax invoice fails an audit, because it breaks the chain the FTA uses to match a supplier’s output VAT against a customer’s input VAT claim.
How to find your own TRN
If you’ve registered but can’t locate your number:
- Check your VAT registration certificate — the TRN appears on it.
- Log in to the FTA’s e-services portal.
- Check any tax invoice you’ve previously issued — your TRN should be on it.
- Check FTA correspondence — registration confirmations and return acknowledgements carry it.
If none of those work, contact the FTA directly through the support channels listed on tax.gov.ae.
TRN deregistration
A business must deregister for VAT in certain circumstances — most commonly, ceasing to make taxable supplies, or taxable supplies falling below the voluntary registration threshold over the relevant period. A business generally has 20 business days from meeting a deregistration condition to submit its application.
Deregistration is not automatic and not optional when the conditions are met, and administrative penalties apply for a late application.
How e-invoicing changes TRN handling
Under the UAE’s e-invoicing framework, the TRN stops being a line of text on a PDF and becomes a structured data field validated at the point of transmission.
That’s a meaningful shift. Today, an invalid TRN typically surfaces late — during your own manual check, or worse, during an FTA audit months after payment. In a structured e-invoicing system, validation happens before the invoice reaches you, so malformed or non-existent registration numbers get caught at source rather than discovered later.
The rollout is phased by turnover threshold — see our guide to e-invoicing in the UAE for the current phase dates and applicability criteria.

Frequently asked questions
What is a TRN in the UAE?
A Tax Registration Number is the unique identifier the Federal Tax Authority issues to a business registered for VAT in the UAE. It must appear on tax invoices and is what allows a business to charge VAT and its customers to reclaim it.
How do I check if a TRN is valid?
Use the FTA’s public TRN verification tool at tax.gov.ae. Enter the number exactly as shown on the invoice, and check that the registered business name returned matches the supplier who issued it.
Is TRN verification free?
Yes. The FTA’s verification tool is public and free, and doesn’t require an account or login.
What happens if I pay an invoice with an invalid TRN?
You generally cannot reclaim the input VAT, meaning the VAT you paid becomes an unrecoverable cost. Verify the TRN before settling the invoice.
Can two businesses share a TRN?
As a general principle a TRN identifies a single registered entity, though the FTA permits related entities to register as a tax group under defined conditions. Under e-invoicing, every entity within a VAT group gets its own TRN by adding a suffix to the group TRN.
Is a TRN the same as a VAT number?
In the UAE context, yes — “TRN” and “VAT number” are used interchangeably to refer to the registration number issued by the FTA for VAT purposes.
Do I need a TRN to issue an invoice?
Not for a regular commercial invoice. You need a TRN to issue a tax invoice and to charge VAT. Businesses that aren’t VAT-registered issue invoices without VAT.
How long does it take to get a TRN?
Timelines depend on application completeness and whether the FTA requests additional documentation.
